Call for Proposals
2024 International Symposium on Autoethnography and Narrative (ISAN)
March 1-3, 2024 (Online)
The 2024 ISAN will again provide scholars and practitioners of all experience levels an opportunity to present their autoethnographic and personal narrative projects and to participate in dialogue and sociability with scholars across a variety of disciplines. The symposium will occur via Zoom on MARCH 1-3, 2024. Eastern Standard Time (EST) will be used for all symposium activities.
All are welcome to attend ISAN, though they must register for it. Registration will open November 1, 2023. Early registration (November 1, 2023-January 15, 2024) will cost $75 (USD) for full-time faculty and professionals, and $50 for students, part-time faculty, guests, and independent scholars. After January 15, 2024, registration will cost $100 and $75 respectively.
And for the first time, all paid registrants will receive one-year of complimentary access to the Journal of Autoethnography. (Access will run April 1, 2024-March 31, 2025.)
We invite proposals for INDIVIDUAL/CO-AUTHORED PROJECTS to be considered for presentation. Creative and innovative approaches to autoethnography and personal narrative are encouraged. Proposals might:
• Use autoethnography and/or personal narrative to engage social, political, cultural, and personal issues
• Address theoretical or methodological aspects of autoethnography and narrative
• Interrogate or advance autoethnographic and narrative practices
Proposals must take the form of an extended abstract (250-500 words). The deadline to submit a proposal is SEPTEMBER 15, 2023. All proposals will be peer reviewed. If a proposal is accepted for presentation, the submitter must create an audio/video recording of their project and submit a link of the recording by January 10, 2024. The link will be used for the ISAN program.
This year, we are also accepting proposals for LIVE DISCUSSION PANELS about a particular topic/theme related to autoethnography and narrative inquiry. If you would like to propose a discussion panel, submit an extended abstract (500+ words) with the following information:
• Title of the panel
• Description of and rationale for the panel
• Brief biography of at least 4 participants who have agreed to participate on the panel
Discussion panels should NOT feature individual projects. At the Symposium, panelists should offer brief (2-3 minute) introductory remarks about a particular topic/theme related to autoethnography and narrative inquiry and then moderate a live discussion with attendees about the topic/theme.
We are no longer accepting submissions for the 2024 ISAN.

• All proposals will be peer reviewed.
• Even though the symposium is online, we still have restrictions on time and (Zoom) space. As such, for the 2024 ISAN, we are limiting participants to no more than two proposals (includes co-authored proposals and/or serving on a discussion panel).
• Registration will open November 1, 2023. To be included in the final program, all participants must register for the Symposium.
• Proposal acceptances will be sent by November 1, 2023.
• If a proposal is accepted, submitters will have until January 10, 2024 to create an audio/video recording of their presentation and submit a link of the recording to include in the Symposium program. Submitters should upload the video to YouTube (preferred) or to Vimeo, OneDrive, Dropbox, or Google Drive for Symposium attendees to view. More information about creating and submitting the video will be forthcoming (November 1, 2023).
• The live Symposium (March 1-3, 2024) will consist of discussion sessions devoted to the pre-recorded presentations. Each session will have a moderator who will keep time, start and end the session, and monitor that each panelist has an opportunity to talk briefly about their presentation. Participants will NOT present during these sessions; they already will have presented via the prerecorded presentation. Instead, these sessions will be interactive, providing a space for panelists to meet and talk to other panelists, for audience members to ask questions and make comments, and for the moderator to offer brief commentary, if desired. To encourage participation and stimulate discussion, we suggest that each panelist provide a brief (2-3 minute) summary of their video at the start of the (live) session at the symposium.
• By February 1, 2024, the first draft of the symposium program will be available to all registrants. Registrants will have one month to view the presentations (via links to the presentation recordings). If a registrant is interested in a particular presentation, they should watch the video before the (live) symposium begins (March 1-3, 2024).
• All presentation links, panel discussions, and other conference activities will only be available to registrants. However, participants should recognize that a registrant possibly could share these links or recorded sessions without permission. Although we cannot totally control these unethical practices, we will take every precaution to constrain them. If any participant is found to be sharing or recording a session without permission, they will not be allowed to continue participating in this conference or in any future conferences organized by this Association. Unfortunately, if a participant has concerns about online privacy, sharing, and recording, then it is probably best that they refrain from participating in the conference.
