2027 International Symposium on Autoethnography and Narrative (ISAN)
5-7 March 2027 (online)
The 2027 ISAN will provide scholars and practitioners of all experience levels an opportunity to present their autoethnographic and personal narrative projects and to socialize with scholars across a variety of disciplines.
The symposium will occur via Zoom on 5-7 March 2027. 5 March will feature sessions in Spanish, Japanese, German, Turkish, and Portuguese; 6-7 March will feature sessions in English. Eastern Standard Time (EST) will be used for all symposium activities.
We now welcome proposals for DISCUSSION PANELS and INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS (see below). The deadline to submit a proposal is 1 October 2026.
If you’re participated in previous ISANs, we’ve altered the submission format and process this year. Please review the revised submission process closely.
Discussion Panels
Discussion Panels are designed for scholars and storytellers who want to explore questions, ideas, or tensions related to autoethnography and personal narrative. Rather than formal presentations of individual projects, Discussion Panels will emphasize dialogue and collaboration.
To propose a discussion panel, submit an extended abstract (300-500 words, inclusive of references) with the following information: a) title, b) description of/rationale for the panel, and c) a brief biography of at least 4 panelists who have agreed to participate.
If you do not have 4 panelists but would like to participate on a discussion panel at the symposium, we welcome individual submissions for possible panels. Submit a brief (100-150 word) description of a methodological, ethical, creative, or pedagogical question related to autoethnography and personal narrative that you would like to discuss at the symposium. We will try to organize these individual submissions into larger, themed discussion panels. At the symposium, participants would briefly (2-3 minutes) introduce their particular question. After these introductions, panelists and attendees will discuss these questions.
The purpose of Discussion Panels is to generate conversation with the audience, not to present a specific research project. If you want to present a research project, submit an INDIVIDUAL (and CO-AUTHORED) PROJECT (see below).
Individual (and Co-authored) Projects
These submissions should take the form of either a 5-8 minute audio/video presentation OR a 3,000-5,000 word paper (inclusive of references). Please be mindful of length requirements. Submissions must relate to autoethnography and/or personal narrative. The recorded presentation or full paper is due at the time of submission. Projects may use any citation style.
If you want to submit a 3,000-5,000 word paper, complete and submit the form below and then send the paper as a .pdf to info@iaani.org by 1 October 2026.
If you want to create a 5-8 minute audio/video presentation of a project, upload the video to YouTube (preferred) or Vimeo, OneDrive, Dropbox, or Google Drive and then submit a link of the recording on the form below.
Accepted presentations/papers will be linked in the symposium program. The program will be made available to registrants on 1 January 2027, several weeks before the symposium. The presentation/paper you submit by the deadline will be the presentation/paper linked in the program. You will NOT have a chance to revise your presentation/paper before the symposium.
The symposium will feature sessions focused on these prerecorded presentations and papers. Each session will have a moderator who will monitor time, start and end the session, and make sure each panelist has an opportunity to talk briefly about their project. Participants will NOT present during the live symposium; they will have already presented via the prerecorded presentation or paper submission. Instead, the live sessions will be interactive, providing a space for panelists to meet and talk with other panelists, and for the moderator and audience members to offer comments and ask questions.
Additional Details
• Submissions are due by 1 October 2026.
• Even though the symposium is online, we still have time and (Zoom) space restrictions. As such, participants are limited to one DISCUSSION PANEL or INDIVIDUAL PROJECT submission.
• All proposals will be peer reviewed.
• Proposal acceptances will be sent on 15 November 2026. If a proposal is accepted, presenters must register by 15 December 2026 to be included in the program. A draft of the program will be released on 1 January 2027.
• Symposium registration will open 15 November 2026. Early registration (15 November 2026-15 January 2027) is $60 (USD) for students, part-time faculty, guests, and independent scholars and $80 (USD) for full-time faculty and professionals. After 15 January 2027, registration is $80 (USD) for students, part-time faculty, guests, and independent scholars and $100 (USD) for full-time faculty and professionals. All paid registrants will receive a one-year subscription to the Journal of Autoethnography.
