2024 IAANI Forum

The Past, Present, and Future of Autoethnography 

January 3-4, 2024 

Dolphin Beach Resort, St. Pete Beach, Florida, USA

After several years of online meetings, the International Association of Autoethnography and Narrative Inquiry (IAANI) will host an in-person Forum on autoethnography. The Forum will be held at the Dolphin Beach Resort (4900 Gulf Blvd., St. Pete Beach, Florida, USA), a hotel on a beautiful white sand beach where we have hosted several prior gatherings. 

The Forum will include the following sessions:

  • Futures for Qualitative Inquiry
  • Ethical Conundrums in Autoethnography
  • Autoethnography in the Digital Age
  • Vulnerable Storytelling: Risks and Rewards
  • Performing Autoethnography
  • Diverse Voices in Autoethnography and Narrative
  • Telling Autoethnographic Stories in Organizations
  • Work-in-Progress Group Sessions and Lunch
  • Aging, Memory, and Imagination
  • Writing through/Living through Illness, Loss, and Trauma
  • Autoethnography in/of The Academy

Only one session will occur at a time, and each session will feature in-depth conversations about the specified topics.

Several folks will facilitate the conversations at these sessions: Art Bochner, Carolyn Ellis, Mark Freeman, Ken Gergen, Carol Rambo, Christina Ivey, Cody Clemens, Mike Alvarez, Tasha Dunn, Marlen Harrison, Benjamin Myers, Csaba Osvath, Jillian Tullis, Pat Sikes, Tony Adams, Keith Berry, Himanee Gupta, Chris Omni, Lisa Spinazola, Patricia Geist Martin, Christine Kiesinger, Andrew Herrmann, Bryant Alexander, Eric Eisenberg, Ron Pelias, Lesa Lockford, Kitrina Douglas, Chris Poulos, Pat Sikes, Lisa Tillmann, Marcin Kafar, Sandra Faulkner, and Kakali Bhattacharya.

There will also be a welcome reception at the venue on Tuesday evening (January 2) and an evening of Karaoke on Wednesday (January 3). We envision a lively, interactive, inspiring, and compassionate gathering, innovative in format and focus.

All are welcome to attend the Forum, everyone must register for the event. As of 11/1/23, we are at full capacity — registration is closed. Given that registration fees will be used to pay for space rental and some food and beverages, they are not refundable after November 15, 2023. ALL registrants will be listed as “participants” in the final program. 

Group rates for Standard Double Rooms are $199.00 per night; Poolside Double Rooms are $239.00 per night; and Deluxe Beach Front Rooms with Two Queens are $289.00 per night, plus taxes. There are no resort or parking fees (usually $40+/day), and only one car can be registered per room. It is important that you reserve a room in the IAANI room block. To make your reservation at the group rate, please call the Dolphin Beach Resort directly at 727-360-7011 and tell them that you are with the “International Association of Autoethnography and Narrative Inquiry.”
